Breaking down the barriers of art

In June last year, MacIntyre was approached by ACCTV, which makes educational films for care home staff that work with older people, to be its expert consultant in a learning programme being made about Learning Disability.

As well as a live airing of the programme earlier this year, a series of shorter films was also created to show people with a learning disability being engaged in work and hobbies.

In one of the films, Kevin Mortimer, the Art Coordinator at Support Plus in Milton Keynes discusses what his role involves and how his team works with the people we support to break down the barriers that art can sometimes present and helps them to express themselves in an energetic and positive way.

Kevin says:

“The paintbrush is a marvellous invention, but not everyone can use one. For people with limited motor skills and limited vision, it’s a hindrance, it’s a barrier. What we’re talking about is breaking down the elements of art to the real basics.”

In the film, watch how Kevin and other members of staff explore different mediums to create pieces of art with the people we support.
