Chesterfield’s new journey

As most people know our block contract with Derbyshire came to an end after 10 years. The change to our contract affected everyone both staff and learners. Learners now have a direct payment and some people had a reduction of hours within the Lifelong learning hubs.

After many consultations we were also in the position to offer people voluntary redundancy across the Chesterfield area. Following the changes we decided to hold a farewell party for everyone. The aim was to have fun whilst giving staff and learners a forum to celebrate their relationships and say goodbye. In some cases people had known each other for 20 plus years.

The party was a fantastic success, not only did we say farewell to people moving to pastures new, we also celebrated the achievements of every single learner across Chesterfield.

Everyone was presented with a small gift and a certificate for their hard work. It was fantastic to see how much people had achieved and how proud each person was when their name was called out. Some people cheered and one person even gave a speech of acceptance.

The staff who were leaving were also given a bottle of fizz and a keepsake for all their hard work over the years.

What did stand out for me was the warmth shown by our staff to all the learners. There were Great Interactions everywhere. People danced, laughed, ate lots of food and generally enjoyed themselves.

We now have a new challenge ahead and a new Hub which will be opening this year. Although the change has been difficult for people, we are now at the beginning of a new chapter for Chesterfield and there is so much to look forward to.

Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful day Laura – a mixture of feelings reflecting on what’s past, celebrating people’s successes and then looking forward to the future. You’re spot on about the warmth in the room – an essential part of all Great Interactions.

Sad to hear about the contract. However, I have no doubt that it won’t be too long before a positive change comes about for Chesterfield. I wish you all the best and look forward to the next chapter. Thank you.

I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the staff and people that are supported within Chesterfield. A great bunch of people and I hope everyone had a great time at the party. Loved that each person was recognised for a personal achievement.
