Interaction Into Art at Wingrave School
Date: 21 Aug 2009
Wingrave School have taken the innovative step of bringing the arts into the everyday sensory lives of its students with the installation of a 'sensory pod'.
The pod is an enclosed, calming space full of textures, sounds, seating, lights and music, which are designed to produce a calming ambience to whomever uses it.
Following a school trip to an exhibition at Banbury Museum by sculptor Jan Niedojadlo, who has been producing sensory sculptures for 20 years, a team of staff and students headed up by Performing Arts teacher Kevin Haynes decided to build their own pod in the grounds of the school.
Helped by funding from MacIntyre's Great Interactions Fund and a surprise offer of help from Niedojadlo himself, work began on the pod in late June.
Contributions were made from every student at the school and over the course of three days the pod itself was complete and ready for use as an innovative, creative and ultimately enjoyable outdoor sensory space.
