Throughout Jan, Feb and March this year Westonia was preparing to close its doors for the very last time. After 20+ years the people we supported were moving to new services within MacIntyre.
Whilst it was a very sad and emotional time for everyone involved it also meant everyone supported was able to stay in services where they knew other people and could still attend the lifelong learning centre. It also meant some of the people we support were able to buy new furniture for their bedrooms and live in a smaller, more homely environment.
It also meant Hubbard Close had a new, full staff team!!
Interactions for the people we support were so important during this transition. We needed to make it as person centred as possible to avoid huge anxieties and distress. Support staff took people to visit their new services and to choose new furniture for their rooms. It was also really important that people already in the services were prepared too for the changes and challenges that lay ahead.
I think this man was particularly delighted with the new bedding he got for his bedroom. He asked to get new stuff for his room and this made him even more involved in the changes in his home.
It really has been refreshing to hear how well the people we supported at Westonia have settled in to their new homes and this is thanks to all staff involved for making this such a smooth transition for everyone concerned.
I would like to wish everyone all the best for their futures.
I’m also sad to be saying goodbye after two years’ service. It really has been a pleasure.
