Highly Commended at the 2017 BILD PBS Leadership Awards

Last week the 2017 BILD PBS Leadership Awards took place in Bristol to celebrate and recognise good practice and contributions to the development of positive behaviour support (PBS) practice. The Awards aim to raise practice by recognising work of quality and quality of contribution over time.

At MacIntyre, we adopt a PBS approach across all divisions and services, so we were delighted that two people we support and a staff member were nominated and subsequently Highly Commended in the awards ceremony.

In Category 2, ‘Innovative practice in Positive Behaviour Support involving service users’, Vicky Smith, who is supported and employed by MacIntyre, was Highly Commended for the positive impact she has on the lives of people supported by MacIntyre. Vicky is a MacIntyre Checker, checking on the quality of Easy Read work, which has included working on the MacIntyre Promises and the Wellbeing Wheel.

On being Highly Commended, Vicky said:

“I was extremely surprised and proud to be Highly Commended and I love the glass award, I thought I would just get a certificate!”

Gwenne McFadzean, Facilitation Advisor at MacIntyre, who nominated Vicky, said:

“I’m absolutely thrilled for Vicky, she has been involved in so many MacIntyre projects and films that staff and people supported by MacIntyre have seen, that it’s lovely to see her recognised for the positive impact she has had on so many people.”

In Category 3, ‘Outstanding Practice in Positive Behaviour Support’, Tomm Collier, who was supported by MacIntyre No Limits and Vicky Grimmer, Programme Co-ordinator for MacIntyre No Limits, were Highly Commended for being an example of what good positive support is. This is demonstrated through Tomm’s growing independence, including his attendance at University, and his passion that all people with autism should have the support he has had to have a better life.

Tomm said:

“I don’t think I’ve ever been in such an exciting situation in my entire life! I feel so proud of myself thanks to this whole thing!”

Adding to this, Victoria said:

“I am so happy that Tomm has had the support from MacIntyre to enable him to be able to achieve his goals in life. Personally, I am grateful to have had the experience of using PBS approaches to support Tomm to enable this to all happen for him. It’s been an amazing journey for us both and I am proud to have been part of this.”

Congratulations to you all and to everyone who was involved with the nomination process!
