Back in September, two of our fabulous supporters Farheen and Natasha laced up their trainers to take on London’s most popular 10K race, the ‘Regents Park 10K’ for MacIntyre, raising £500.
The total raised by Farheen and Natasha was used to support Michael*, one of the young people at MacIntyre School and Children’s Homes, revolutionising the way he communicates.
As a quiet young man with a love of Disney, Michael finds communicating with others challenging. He often feels frustrated and upset when unable to express what he would like or how he is feeling.
When staff were presented with the funds raised by Farheen and Natasha, they had just the idea to help Michael. A digital communication aid...using an iPad.
Sophia, a Speech and Language Language Therapist at MacIntyre School who has been working with Michael said:
“Last year we trialled Michael using an iPad which has a picture-based communication system on it, known as a 'high tech communication aid'. He instantly took an interest to use the iPad and we were surprised how quickly he learnt to navigate through the different pages of symbols and could comment on an activity or make a request. The fact the communication aid was on an iPad made it instantly more appealing for him to use."
Speaking about the difference the iPad has made to Michael's communication, Sophia added:
"The iPad showed us how much he understands and has the potential to communicate. Having a reliable method of communication means less frustration and the freedom to express what he wants/needs. This means more life satisfaction. Whilst the communication aids are expensive, the positive outcome and difference to a young person's life definitely makes it worthwhile."
Thank you to Farheen and Natasha for your support!
