One of those moments
June 30th, 2014
Thanks to the server being down it gave me time to reflect on a session I had just taken part in and has given me the opportunity to put pen to paper. This isn’t a long blog but it was just one of those special moments that just happened and I think just about every facilitation skill was used.
When Robert gets up to sing each week he always directs his song to Liz and this has been going on for a while. Staff have been encouraging Liz to do a duet with him for quite sometime now. A little unsteady on her feet Liz sits on a chair to sing so the member of staff gave Robert a chair to sit on as well so they were both on the same level. Robert took the lead in creating this Great Interaction moving his chair so he could look at Liz. While singing he would touch Liz’s arm to give her reassurance and encouragement and when it was his turn to sing he asked her to look at him. The whole group were on the edge of their chairs watching and listening to them both, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The whole thing took just minutes but I will remember it for a life time, that’s why this job is so special.
Other MacIntyre staff took part in this session supporting people and what I witnessed was fabulous; everyone joins in encouraging people to sing and dance, the warmth in the room was red hot! All this couldn’t have been planned it just happened…or maybe it starts to come naturally when we keep practicing our facilitative approach?
