Making Friends and Making a Difference

5 June 2026
Blog post

by Pete Connor, Great Communities Manager

It was important to PJ to make new friends and try new things. He wanted to widen his friendship circle in Warrington.

I went to a meeting for different groups from the voluntary sector. Someone there had seen the Garden Project on Facebook and had seen what the Garden Gang had done. She asked if we could come and have a look at the children’s centre outdoor space that she was working at. They wanted to improve the space.

The Garden Gang were keen to help out and PJ was really keen to join them. It was all things he hadn’t done before but he got involved with clearing the space, painting and tidying it. He’s also spent time chatting the rest of the group and making good friends. PJ wanted to make friends. And he has done!

But he has also developed his skills gardening, painting and DIY. It’s been brilliant to watch his confidence grow volunteering to make life better for other people. Especially people who are having a tough time.

PJ says:

I enjoyed working at the children’s centre as it’s a peaceful and relaxing environment. I love getting my hands dirty gardening and I like working with my mates in the group too.

We are an integral part of Warrington’s voluntary sector. We can use our skills and time and resources to help!
