At the Grove as a team, we thought about the things that we are good at and what we enjoy. We like to go for a drive. We like organising things. Food is important to us all!! And we wanted to help near us, it’s important to us all to have a purpose. We found out about a local Bedfordshire charity, SOS - Saturday Outreach Service.
SOS support people who are homeless with gathering donations of surplus food and give them out on a Wednesday and Saturday. We have taken on the job of collecting donations from the Cottage Bakery in Ampthill on a Saturday before 2pm.
We then return to the Grove to separate and bag up what we have been given. This can be cakes pastries and bread. We are also given left over fillings which we make into sandwiches with the loaves and rolls. We then deliver these to an address in Barton for the volunteers to take to Bedford and hand out.
It matches everyone’s skills: we all take on the bit of the jobs that we can do.
And the next step will be to go in the evening and be part of giving the food out and meeting some of the people we are making sandwiches for.
