Supporting People as They Grow Older

14 April 2018
News

MacIntyre’s Adult Services Director, Emma Killick, has contributed to a new guideline from NICE which covers the care and support for adults with learning disabilities as they grow older.

The guideline is aimed at helping commissioners and providers identify, plan and provide for the care and support needs of people growing older with learning disabilities and their families and carers. It covers integrated commissioning and planning; service delivery and organisation; providing accessible information, advice and support; identifying and assessing people’s changing needs; care planning; and supporting access to services including health, social care, housing and end of life care. It aims to ensure that people with learning disabilities are given the help they need to access a range of services as they grow older so they can live healthy and fulfilled lives.

Emma said:

“Being a member of this Guideline Committee was an amazing experience. I am extremely proud of the inclusive nature of the whole project – both NICE and SCIE were totally committed to ensuring that our work was led and informed by our Panel Members who are Experts by Experience Pat, Michael and Dawn as well as seeking creative ways to obtain stakeholder feedback from people with lived experience during the consultation stage.

I believe the inclusive nature of this work is evident from the quality of the final guidelines and serves as a model for future work.”
