Brian* is 69 and lives in his own flat in Bury.
For many years, Brian had been used to other people doing things for him. He had little opportunity to make decisions about his day or take care of his own home. Having his own flat gave him the chance to start doing more for himself and build confidence in everyday life.
When Brian moved into his flat in October 2025, supported by MacIntyre, the team took the time to get to know him and understand what would help him feel at home. Brian is Jamaican, and Marlon, one of the people supporting him, shares his heritage and was born in the same village as Brian. That connection helped Brian settle into his new home and gave him someone he could relate to from the start.
The team supported Brian to build confidence while giving him the space to do things for himself. He began going shopping by himself, managing his own money and taking care of things around his home. He enjoys looking for a bargain and is proud of the things he can now do independently. Brian has also reconnected with his family, which has been particularly important to him and his sense of identity.
As Brian has become more confident, he has needed less support. He spends his days out and about, making his own choices and taking care of his home. At the end of the day, he can make his tea, have a chat with staff and settle in knowing that he is coming home to his own place.
Brian is now looking towards his next step. He is preparing to move to a new flat where he will have more independence, with staff available when he needs them. It’s another opportunity for Brian to build on the skills he has developed and have greater choice over his everyday life.
For Brian, having his own home has meant more than having a front door of his own. It has given him the opportunity to make choices, build confidence and take on more of everyday life for himself.
