How we learn about Intensive Interaction

13 July 2023
News

We prize highly our knowledge of Intensive Interactions. But our knowledge hasn’t been gained in a vacuum.

Intensive Interaction Institute

We’ve developed a close relationship with the Intensive Interaction Institute. The principles they espouse and teach are life-changing.

We have seen so many young people develop social skills because of Intensive Interaction.

The Institute website explains:

Intensive Interaction teaches and develops the Fundamentals of Communication, attainments such as use and understanding of eye contacts, facial expressions, vocalisations leading to speech, taking turns in exchanges of conversation and the structure of conversation.

Showing respect

And we can’t get better than this statement by a clinical psychologist:

By spending time with someone using Intensive Interaction we are valuing them: respecting them and meeting their basic human need to make meaningful and satisfying relationships, which is central for a decent quality of life.

Here’s a video clip of Kate, our Intensive Interaction Facilitator & Mentor, with a young man with whom she’s built a warm relationship. You’ll see some of the techniques of Intensive Interaction in action here – watch how Kate mostly lets the young man take the lead. But more than anything, we think they’re just having fun together!

Explaining the roles

To finish, here are two key graphics from the Institute (used with permission) explaining transactional roles and the fundamentals of communication.
