Everyone who becomes part of a Shared Lives family has a different reason for needing further support. While some people may require short-term support, others may turn to carers for guidance and encouragement through adulthood.

For 25-year-old Daryl, meeting Jann and Richard not only gave him the confidence he needed but an opportunity to become part of a stable and loving family.

Before living with his Shared Lives carers Jann and Richard, Daryl had trouble managing his finances and struggled to maintain a permanent job. After completing a catering course at his local college, it was time for Daryl to decide what his next step would be. As his parents were struggling to provide the support he needed to develop independent skills, Daryl decided that a Shared Lives arrangement was what he needed to continue to grow.

Since moving in with Jann and Richard three years ago, Daryl continues to flourish. Whilst he still needs support with his money, he now volunteers with the National Autistic Society, managing the till in their shop.

Daryl still sees his parents regularly, but living with Jann and Richard has given him confidence, independence and stability.

Daryl’s thoughts on Shared Lives:

“It’s fun and gets you out of your comfort zone. It’s about maintaining your independence, but having support when you need it. If I hadn’t have come here, my life would be very unsettled and I felt I couldn’t speak to anyone where I was, now I always have someone around when I need it.”
