Aimee's love of Makaton is helping people across Bedfordshire and beyond learn new ways to communicate.
The idea began after Aimee attended a concert by the Ampthill Singers. During a performance of A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, Aimee stood and signed along in Makaton. Her signing drew lots of compliments and positive feedback from members of the choir, who were impressed by both her confidence and her knowledge.
The experience sparked a conversation. Could Aimee use her Makaton skills to help others learn?
Together, we came up with the idea of a regular "Sign of the Week" feature for MacIntyre's Bedfordshire Facebook page and Bedfordshire TikTok channel. Since then, Aimee has become the star of the series, teaching followers a new sign each week through short videos.
Aimee takes the lead in choosing most of the signs herself. Sometimes she picks signs linked to events and occasions such as Halloween, Remembrance Day or Christmas.
The videos have become a popular feature, helping people learn simple Makaton signs and raising awareness of the importance of accessible communication. Followers regularly engage with the posts, sharing their favourite signs and what they have learned. One person commented: "Thank you Aimee, I especially love the sign for horse." Through her knowledge and enthusiasm, Aimee is helping more people understand how Makaton can support inclusion and connection.
What started with one song at a local concert has grown into something much bigger as Aimee shares her skills with a wider audience, helping people learn, communicate and connect in new ways.
By using her expertise to teach others, Aimee is making a positive difference far beyond her own home and community.
