A careers conversation with Jemima and Bronte

26 July 2022
News

Have you ever thought about a career in social care? Can you make a difference working with people who have a learning disability and/or Autism?

To get a better insight working at MacIntyre, Jemima and Bronte (Support Workers based in St Albans) have kindly sat down with us to talk about their experience.

Jemima:

“Hi my name is Jemima and I have been working for MacIntyre for almost a year. I have been working in the care sector my entire life. I have worked with the elderly, children and people with learning disabilities. After shifting my focus on other areas within the care sector, I decided to return to supporting people with learning disabilities and felt MacIntyre was a perfect fit. I had previously worked for another major care organisation and had always heard the name MacIntyre mentioned and knew it had a great reputation.”

Bronte:

“Hi, my name is Bronte and I have been at MacIntyre for just under a year now. So before joining MacIntyre I was a student studying for my Psychology degree. Afterwards, I decided that I wanted to become a paramedic and began searching for jobs within the care sector just to gain some experience. I was actually unaware of the Support Worker roles at MacIntyre but after looking at the job description, I became interested and joined the organisation.”

When discussing advice for anyone joining the care sector for the first time Jemima said:

“Enjoy, relax and always remember to ask questions, the staff are so friendly and are all here to help. It is hard work, but it is well worth it at the end of the day, when you know you’ve done something good for somebody, it is the best feeling!”

Bronte added:

“If I was to give advice to someone joining MacIntyre for the first time, I would say just go for it! Don’t feel afraid to get stuck in even if you feel alienated in an environment that is completely new to you. You may not always understand what is going on but like Jemima said, always feel free to ask questions, everyone is so welcoming and friendly and are always there to help.”

What do they hope for the future of social care?

Jemima:

“The staff here are extremely lovely and brilliant at their job and love helping the people who draw on our support, there is that special bond between them. We just need more staff like our existing employees to join so that they can truly understand how amazing MacIntyre is.”

Bronte:

“I do second that, it is all about the staff we work with who have that passion and desire to help the people that we support, it would be great to add more staff that have the same love for the job that we do.”
