Emily's Story

3 August 2022
News

Part of the new MacIntyre DNA focuses on being “ambitious for ourselves and each other”.

When MacIntyre first met Emily*, she found new experiences a challenge. With support from MacIntyre No Limits™, Emily was able to achieve her dream of working alongside acclaimed chefs and gain skills to start her career in catering.

Emily developed a passion for catering during her first year at MacIntyre No Limits. Emily began working for a local non-profit café with encouragement and support, where she gradually began to step outside of her comfort zone and take the first step towards working in hospitality.

Approaching her final year at MacIntyre No Limits, Emily and her parents were eager to find new ways to inspire her. Working together, Emily, her parents and the No Limits team began to discuss additional ways to support Emily in developing independence and learning new skills.

Emily’s love for different cultures of food and cooking various cuisines stemmed from her father working abroad, where she was fortunate enough to travel with her family and meet new people. This new found passion led to staff helping Emily find a work experience placement that combined both her interest in food and hospitality.

After a successful interview with major department store John Lewis, Emily landed a work placement within the catering department where she regularly assisted the Chefs, serving meals to staff and customers. This valuable experience helped improve Emily’s self-esteem and independence and inspired her to follow her dream and build a career in hospitality.

Emily’s mum said:

“MacIntyre offered us a unique opportunity to explore what was important to Emily. She was not an independent traveller and so staff provided one on one support, which enabled her to travel to the café. This was the first time Emily had travelled without parental support, but this boosted to her self-esteem, whilst preparing her for the future.”

As a result of her hard work and determination, Emily secured an internship at the Hilton Hotel.

Emily’s story exemplifies MacIntyre’s DNA – “we are ambitious for ourselves and each other”. With support from MacIntyre and her family, along with her determination Emily is realising her ambition to succeed in the catering industry.
