MAP Laps brings community together for mental health charity
Students from the MacIntyre and Abingdon College Partnership (MAP) took on a sponsored challenge at Albert Park in March, raising money for The Abingdon Bridge while showing what can happen when young people are given the encouragement to push themselves.
Across two days, students, families, staff and supporters came together for MAP Laps, a sponsored event where students walked, ran, wheeled and rode laps around the park. The event was co-produced by staff and the student council, with students helping to shape and lead the challenge themselves.
The atmosphere across both days was full of encouragement, celebration and determination, with supporters lining the route to cheer students on. One of the most emotional moments came when a young man who would usually use a wheelchair completed a full lap on foot, supported by applause and cheers from the crowd.
As well as raising funds for local mental health support, the event also challenged perceptions about what young people with physical and learning disabilities can achieve. For many students, it became something even more personal: a chance to build confidence and independence.
One student said:
When we’re part of something like this, it helps us step into our adult lives.
A parent added:
I never thought I’d see him do something like this.
Both days included a community picnic, donated by a sponsor. Staff, families and local supporters all played a part in making the event happen, including colleagues who took on their own fundraising challenges alongside the students.
The success of MAP Laps reflected the spirit of Everyone Everywhere, creating opportunities for people to be seen, included and celebrated in their communities, while building long-lasting confidence.
