What happens when you throw open the doors of a learning centre and invite the whole neighbourhood in for a day of fun?
At Fletchers Mews in Milton Keynes everyone gets involved.
We hosted a community fun day in August, bringing everyone together for an afternoon packed with games, food, stalls and entertainment.
There was plenty going on, from face painting, giant outdoor games and sponge throwing to a tombola and raffle. Local craftspeople brought along their handmade creations to sell, while the cake stall offered plenty of temptation.
One of the highlights was a performance from the Fletchers Follies, a dance group made up of people who attend the centre who came together just for the day. They performed a routine they had created, entertaining the crowd with enthusiasm.
And the fun was a two-way affair. Neighbourhood children drenched each other (and mum) in the wet sponge throwing, neighbours browsed the stalls and everyone had the chance to meet, chat, eat and have a go at something new. Even the axe-throwing competition drew a crowd, although judging by the participants' skills, everyone was glad they were only safety axes!
For MacIntyre, the day was about more than having fun. It was another opportunity to strengthen the connection between the learning centre and the people who live around it.
People who draw on MacIntyre's support aren't separate from their communities. They are neighbours, performers, makers, competitors, hosts and friends, with plenty to contribute to the places where they live.
The Fletchers Mews fun day was a chance for everyone to bring something to the table. And judging by the laughter, dancing, cake and slightly questionable axe-throwing skills, the community was very happy to join in.
