Nigel’s taking charge

26 March 2025
News

Nigel moved into his new home with support from MacIntyre in Milton Keynes in 2023. He had previously spent time in a long-stay hospital and, on leaving hospital, lived in shared accommodation, which didn’t suit him, so MacIntyre and Nigel worked together to find him his new home.

With the help of a housing provider, Places for People, Nigel found his perfect new home. The local team worked alongside MacIntyre’s Positive Behaviour Support team as well as his family, particularly his sister, with whom he has a close relationship, to create a plan tailored to Nigel’s needs, helping him adjust to his new environment in a way that felt comfortable and secure.

Since moving in, Nigel’s life has changed for the better. He has become more sociable - and one of his new favourite activities is attending the monthly Groovy Gecko Disco, where he enjoys socialising and dancing.

Nigel takes great pride in his appearance and loves shopping for clothes and going to the barber’s. His love for gadgets and technology has grown too: he now uses a smart watch to track his steps and an iPad to connect with others. Nigel has gained in confidence and independence – he now enjoys doing the food shopping, and he has even overcome some of his fears; he used to be afraid of visiting the dentist, but now he looks forward to his appointments.

Claudia, the local manager, said:

“When Nigel moved into his new home, we knew how important it was for him to regain his independence. Since then, he’s come so far. He’s much more confident, more involved in the house, and loves spending time with others.”

Nigel is actively involved with how his home is run, particularly in the health and safety around the house by running fire drills, testing fire alarms, and even leading a recent CQC inspection where he proudly showed the Inspector all his paperwork and risk assessments. The CQC Inspector said they loved meeting Nigel and were impressed with how involved Nigel was and how he ran such a tight ship.

Looking to the future, Nigel and his team are excited about the opportunities ahead. He recently visited the seaside for the first time and he’s looking forward to more trips and continuing to explore new activities and adventures.
