We recently moved to a new hub in Staveley, Chesterfield, and wanted to get involved in the local community.
We looked around at opportunities to help and found that the local Edge Ministries Centre has a community garden. They needed volunteers to help with the project. We have several people who were keen to be involved and have a love of gardening.
Gary, James, David and Gavin worked with the volunteers to decide what to grow in the plot allocated to MacIntyre. The volunteers gave us plenty of options and helped the men use a new gardening method called `No Dig Gardening` which means planting through cardboard then putting mulch on top.
If the weather isn't suitable for gardening, we help inside with jobs such as cleaning the tools. Gavin says he does a good job with the spade and is incredibly proud of his contribution to the group. We also helped with putting away their Christmas decorations and helped order food for the food pantry the next day.
After the day's session is finished we all sit down together to eat lunch and have a chat - James really enjoys making drinks for the other volunteers
It's been great to meet our neighbours, and grow produce to donate to people in the local community. We must admit we're looking forward to the warmer weather though!
