Season 6, Episode 2
In the latest episode of the The MacIntyre Podcast, we speak with Matty Caine, founder of the Liverpool-based social enterprise First Person Project and Trustee at MacIntyre.
Matty brings both professional expertise and personal experience to the conversation. After many years working as a registered mental health nurse, he was driven by personal loss and a desire to improve access to mental health support to create First Person Project, a community-focused organisation dedicated to improving mental health through connection and grassroots action.
In the episode, Matty reflects on the importance of open conversations about mental health and the role communities can play in supporting wellbeing. He discusses how traditional systems can sometimes create barriers to help, and why approaches rooted in trust, relationships and local networks can make a powerful difference.
Matty also talks about the link between his work and his role as a MacIntyre Trustee. He shares his perspective on how organisations can develop cultures that prioritise mental health, in our case both for people who draw on our support and for our staff.
Throughout the conversation, the focus returns to a simple but powerful idea: that everyone has a role in supporting mental wellbeing, whether through listening, connecting people, or creating spaces where conversations feel safe and stigma-free.
