Every Wednesday, three young people from MacIntyre School attend riding sessions with Wing Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) at Mursley Hall Farm Equestrian Centre.
The weekly sessions give them the opportunity to develop their riding skills while improving their mobility, physical health and emotional wellbeing. Just as importantly, they help build confidence, encourage communication and create opportunities to learn new skills.
The difference has been remarkable. Since starting the sessions, young people have grown in confidence and become more communicative. One young person, for example, now proudly shows photos of themselves riding to staff they don't know so well, using the pictures to start conversations, a significant step forward in their confidence and communication.
Earlier this month, Mursley Hall Farm hosted a fundraising event in support of Wing RDA. The "Handy Pony" competition challenged riders to complete an obstacle course on horseback, weaving through cones and poles while carrying balls, rings and flags. Participants were encouraged to come in fancy dress, following a green or Disney theme, with prizes awarded for the fastest round, best costume and the highest amount of sponsorship raised.
Two young people from MacIntyre's children's homes in Wingrave took part after spending several weeks practising the obstacles during their regular riding lessons. Family members came along to cheer them on as they rode their favourite horses and confidently completed the course.
Despite the busy atmosphere and unfamiliar surroundings, both riders rose to the challenge with determination and enthusiasm. They each completed the course, proudly received a rosette, and helped raise money for a charity that has made such a positive difference in their own lives.
It was a wonderful day that celebrated confidence, community and giving something back.
