Alexa, tell me…

29 October 2018
Blog post

At MacIntyre’s brand new service in Hampshire, the first tenant, James moved in two weeks ago. The verbal communication for James is limited, and historically there have always been behaviours of concern due to communication frustrations.

James arrived on his birthday and was very excited at the fact he had his own flat.

The staff had been spending time with James through transition from a residential school to his new home. The school staff had said that James will become anxious if the ‘wrong’ music is on the radio or TV channels, and this could escalate. So a creative solution was needed!

The staff team discussed how they could enable James to manage the music for himself and this is where Alexa came in. One of the team kindly brought in an Echo Dot for James to trial, and what a success it was. James loved the fact that the channel could change on command. James used to listen to the radio on his TV, but now he can use a digital radio and read the stations and also command Alexa to play various favourite radio stations like Magic, Capital, Radio 1 etc

This creative solution has given James such control over his music and he now loves saying ‘Alexa please...’
