Here at MacIntyre, we like to ensure that all of the people that we support are engaged in various fun activities where they can develop new skills whilst discovering a new hobby.
Keryn, who is supported by MacIntyre has taken up a new interest in sewing, where she has been working hard on an apron for over two weeks.
When discussing the idea behind this activity, Learning Support Worker Deborah said:
“We set up a textile group at the Learning Centre around Christmas time that would incorporate sewing, knitting, crochet, rug making, anything to do with textiles really. Keryn had not been on a sewing machine before this and really loved it. We made a cushion together and then a small drawstring bag.”
She added:
“I thought the apron would be a good progression so I made the pattern and Keryn chose the fabric and helped lay out the pattern and cut round it. She then had to press the pieces with help then pinned the seams and sewed them together.”
Deborah further added how enjoyable the experience was for Keryn and described her favourite part of the design process:
“Keryn loved sewing with the machine and was overjoyed with the finished result. She took it home to show her mum and uses it to cook with at home in her flat.”
