Kevin is a man MacIntyre supports in Buckinghamshire. He shares a large, rambling house with four friends who all know each other really well. They enjoy darts, snooker, going out for a meal together and all sorts of other pastimes.
When Kevin was growing up, his family weren’t sure if he would be able to live independently, or have any kind of work.
When Kevin first moved into his new home, he was quite shy and withdrawn. He didn’t like to go out much and seemed unsure of himself.
Well a few years on and you wouldn’t recognise him! Kevin is friendly, outgoing and has a lot of connections in his local community.
Key to his development has been volunteering at a local charity shop. It’s just along the road from his home, and he walks up there for regular volunteering stints. He’s one of several volunteers who keep the shop clean, greet customers, and sort, organise and replenish the stock. Kevin particularly enjoys organising the DVDs on sale!
He has formed some great relationships with the shop manager and other volunteers. Kevin’s work shows so clearly the advantages of volunteering for everyone concerned.
Volunteering at MacIntyre
We've been focusing here on the benefits of volunteering for people with a learning disability or autism who draw on our support. We also have volunteering opportunities within MacIntyre. Look out for more information on this in another news item. Or meanwhile check out our Volunteering information.
