We're delighted to announce that Laura Selby has recently joined our Director Team, as Adult Services Director. Laura previously held responsibility for the expansion of our Specialist Supported Living teams in the North.
We caught up with Laura to learn about her previous experience, explore what she aims to bring to the role and discover a fact we don't know about her.
Can you tell us about your previous experience?
I have 20 years’ experience in social care. I started my career as a nursey nurse then worked as a teaching assistant supporting students with additional needs. I joined MacIntyre five years ago.
I’ve been lucky enough to work for a number of successful national charities over the years, all of which have shown me new ways of working and helped shape the leader that I am today.
Most of my roles have been in a leadership position but many of my fondest memories are from my time as a support worker.
I’ve always had an interest in psychology and when I got the chance to study a Bachelor’s Degree as a mature student I jumped at the chance. My course was focused on ‘Personality Disorders and Psychology’ which I found fascinating and something that really made me think differently,
Something you wouldn’t know about me?
I was lucky enough to represent England with Rotary International. I took part in their Group Study Exchange which enabled me to travel across the Philippines whilst undertaking voluntary work in public and private hospitals. The aim of the programme was to share best practise with local clinicians and gain insight into how a country without an NHS service support people with mental health needs. I stayed with local families and totally immersed myself into the culture. It was most definitely one of the best experiences of my life.
In my spare time, I have helped set up a community interest company. I will soon take a role on the CIC’s board which will help me shape its future direction. We focus on environmental issues and working with the local community to make a positive impact.
Seeing what can be achieved with true community collaboration is amazing and something I feel very passionate about.
What do you think you will bring to the role?
I bring many years of social care experience whilst also bringing a genuine passion for making a positive difference in people’s lives. I don’t stand still in terms of thinking about what can be achieved and have a real drive in trying new creative ideas. I enjoy seeing people thrive and fulfil their potential, whilst also understanding what people can contribute to their local communities.
I see my role as guiding hand, a listening ear and a person who can help shape and lead MacIntyre’s vision.
