Learning Makaton

4 February 2020
News

To successfully communicate how we feel is an incredibly important skill, something the students at MacIntyre School and Children’s Homes have been working on with support from Emma, a Community Learning Facilitator at MacIntyre.

Emma has been supporting the students to learn Makaton, a unique language that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate, supporting the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

To begin with, the students have been tackling topics such as signing the weather and emotions. Emma ensures the sessions are interactive and fun; including worksheets, colouring and crafts to inspire the students.

Emma shared:

“It's important to make the experience fun and engaging. The students get so excited about using new signs!”
