by Jane Smith, Director of People
Moving into month three since I joined MacIntyre, I have been reflecting on the power of an everyday strengths-based approach.
One of the things I have seen so clearly is that when people’s talents, skills and contributions are noticed and amplified, it creates energy. It builds confidence, motivation and connection. It also links people back to something much deeper: individual fulfilment, personal purpose and the meaningful difference they make every day.
That matters enormously in an organisation like MacIntyre.
The contribution our colleagues make is relational, skilled and deeply human. It depends on people feeling valued, supported and able to bring the best of themselves to their roles. It also depends on us creating the right conditions around them.
For me, this is where the strategic People agenda becomes very real. It is not enough to have good intentions or broad ambitions. We need clarity about the destination we are working towards, and we need to be able to break that down into practical steps that work operationally, at scale, across complex and varied settings.
That is not always easy. MacIntyre is a large, dispersed and beautifully diverse organisation. What works in one setting may need adapting in another. The challenge is to move forward with enough consistency to create shared direction, while staying close enough to local reality for the work to be meaningful and deliverable.
What is clear is that the People Function is all about creating the conditions for colleagues and leaders to do their best work, and supporting people who draw on our support to live gloriously ordinary lives.
As we move ahead, we are building on the strengths already present. There is so much care, commitment, skill and creativity across the organisation. The opportunity is to connect that more intentionally, strengthen the foundations around it, and build the shared rhythm, confidence and capability needed to be sustainable well into the future.
This is about helping MacIntyre continue to be the kind of place where people feel they belong, where strengths are recognised, where potential is encouraged, and where colleagues are supported to do work that has real meaning.
A huge shout out and thank you to everyone I have met along the way so far - colleagues, people who draw on our support, families, partners, and those within and beyond the sector who have so generously shared their time and insight. Thank you for the warm welcome, the honesty, the challenge, the stories, the pride and the care you have shared.
We are starting to firm up exciting plans that will make the biggest difference. As MacIntyre is celebrating our 60th year anniversary, this work feels like an important contribution to a sustainable future - one I feel delighted, honoured and very humbled to be playing a part in.
