There’s a big playing field near Wayne’s house in Bedfordshire, and one Sunday morning he noticed people gathering there. We went along to find out what was happening and discovered the local junior parkrun.
Junior parkrun gives children aged 4 to 14 the chance to run 2km, with a team of volunteers helping to make it happen each week.
Wayne loves being outdoors and enjoys helping people, so volunteering at Parkrun seemed like a natural fit. There are lots of different jobs volunteers can do, and Wayne started by cheering the children on as they ran.
He’s now taken on a couple of more practical jobs, including helping to clear away the bollards and markers at the end of the run. But his favourite role is handing out the barcode tokens to children as they cross the finish line, so they can register their times.
It’s a small but important part of making Parkrun happen, and a great way for Wayne to be part of something happening in his local community.
Thanks to everyone at junior parkrun for making Wayne so welcome!
