MAP College has been part of the community for more than 20 years through the long-standing partnership between MacIntyre and Abingdon & Witney College. As soon as you walk into the building, it’s already buzzing with activity. Learners and staff move around the kitchen, some getting ready to head out, others catching up on plans for the day. It’s busy but calm, and everyone knows what they’re doing.
It’s Cantina Day, and the kitchen is in full swing. Jeremy* has just returned from Aldi with his ingredients and is working through his list as he prepares a tuna pasta salad. He gets started chopping onions and peppers, taking guidance from his support worker if he needs it. Nearby, Anton* is completely in his element, making a big pot of chilli that will be shared with everyone at MAP. Cooking is one of his favourite parts of the week, and while keeping an eye on the onions, we chat about fried chicken and why Kentucky will always beat Korean.
Kayleigh*, a first-year learner, works on her own tasks with her support worker, Octavia. They talk about baking and hairstyles as they move between conversation and practical tasks. When the kitchen gets lively, they step out for a short walk before returning to finish lunch prep.
When the meal is ready, everyone gathers around the table. Staff and learners sit together, eating the food they’ve prepared and chatting about the morning. It’s clear this is a part of the day everyone enjoys.
The afternoon has a different rhythm, as some learners head to music, arts or enterprise sessions, while others focus on maths, English, communication or life skills. Many follow the Life Skills programme, and a few attend the main college with support from MacIntyre.
Work experience is a big part of life here too. Anton spends Tuesdays at Café Aroma taking orders and serving customers, while other learners explore roles they might want in the future.
Learning Pathways at No Limits and MAP
Every learner follows a pathway shaped around their own goals and ambitions:
- Onwards to Engagement
- Onwards to Independence
- Onwards to Employment
- Onwards to Further Education
No two journeys are the same, and we believe that’s exactly how it should be. For some, it’s about building confidence and communication; for others, it’s preparing for work, volunteering or further study. Each pathway is personal, helping learners move forward in their own time, in their own way.
By the end of the day, what stands out is how ordinary and real everything is. People cooking, learning, planning, laughing and building skills at a pace that suits them. A normal day, for real people, learning and living in a place that fits them.
