Celebrating culture and community

28 October 2025
News

At our school and children’s homes in Wingrave, diversity isn’t just something we acknowledge, it’s something we celebrate. With staff and children coming from a wide range of backgrounds, we’ve built a community where culture is embraced, shared, and experienced by everyone, together.

Why diversity and community matter to us

Our children’s homes are made up of a diverse mix of children and staff. From Nepal to the West Indies, Ireland to Pakistan, it’s important for us that every child and member of staff feels seen, heard, and celebrated.

Cultural awareness helps our young people understand where they come from, but just as importantly, it helps them learn about others. For our staff, it's also a chance to bring their culture into the workplace and share it proudly.

What we celebrate

At Wingrave we try to celebrate culture and diversity at least once a month. These events are more than just themed days, they’re opportunities for connection. Whether it's a youth club event for Eid, Easter or monthly activities that explore different traditions, we believe in creating shared experiences that bring us all closer.

One highlight was our World Celebration Event in August. We transformed the school hall into a mini world tour, with stands representing Ireland, the West Indies, Nepal, the Philippines and more. Each stand was inspired by a child’s background and offered an activity, snack, or sensory experience.

Children were given little “passports” that got stamped as they visited each station — from trying fruit punch and ginger beer, to playing with green clover-shaped messy play trays, to listening to music from around the globe. The children absolutely loved it, and so did the staff!

Connecting with the wider community

We’ve also made efforts to strengthen our links with the local Wingrave community. Children now take part in village barbecues, decorate the local church for festivals, and are increasingly recognised and welcomed by community members.

This connection helps our young people feel like valued members of their community, not just their home and school.

What makes it work?

What makes our cultural celebrations so successful is that they include everyone, staff and children alike. Events are designed to educate, but also to enjoy. By participating together, we build a deeper sense of unity.

Most importantly, we create a space where everyone feels like they belong.
