Finding work that feels right

23 July 2026
News

When people asked Keira what she wanted for the future, her answer is always the same: she wants a job.

When Keira joined No Limits in Milton Keynes, she had recently left school and moved into her own place. There was a lot to adjust to, and it took time to find her feet.

As staff got to know her, one thing became clear. College work didn’t motivate her, work did.

So Keira and the team spent time figuring out what she wanted.

Listening first

Rebecca, MacIntyre's Job Coach, spent time getting to know Keira and talking about the things she enjoys.

Shopping came up quickly, as did spending time in charity shops, so together, they put together a CV, worked through health and safety, and found a volunteering opportunity at the Sue Ryder charity shop close to where Keira lives.

Before she started, Keira worked hard to show she was ready to work, and spending time at the No Limits site in Great Holm, became part of preparing for work.

Then came her first shift.

She stood outside the shop for a while, needing a little time before heading in, but when she felt ready, she walked through the door, and stayed for the whole shift.

The following week, she wanted to go back.

Somewhere to belong

Keira started with one hour a week.

Now she's volunteering for longer, getting to know the team and gradually taking on new tasks. She especially enjoys sorting the DVDs and has built a great relationship with Jade, the shop manager.

Thursday has its own routine now: hair done, shirt and tie on, ready for work.

Having somewhere she wants to be has helped her feel more settled and more optimistic about what's next. She still talks about work whenever people ask about the future. For now though, she's exactly where she wants to be and Thursdays can’t come quick enough.
