Meet Darren, who turned 50 in January. He has a mild learning disability and a personality disorder, which means he needs some support with his routine, independence, and managing his mental health. Before moving into his own home with support from MacIntyre, Darren spent 8 years in a long-term hospital, with limited contact with his family.
In 2019, Darren moved out of hospital and into his new home. With support from MacIntyre and mental health professionals, he is living independently, and Darren and his team are figuring out where he needs support and where he can manage on his own.
His relationship with his mum has improved, and she’s now a key part of his support system.
Darren was encouraged to get involved with his local community, which at first, he was unsure about, but the team supported him to try new things like going to college and exploring work opportunities, as well as cooking classes and volunteering at a food bank.
Darren says he’s found purpose, his routine has become more settled, and he’s become more independent.
As Darren’s mental health has improved, he wanted to review his medication as he is feeling much better and doesn’t need as much support, which has also led to a reduction in his medication,
While he still needs support with managing his emotions, his team support him sticking to a routine and staying safe.
Looking ahead, Darren is excited about the future. He’s interested in going on holiday abroad with his mum and continues to volunteer at the food bank, picking up extra shifts. He is eager to improve his woodworking and DIY skills. Darren has already decorated his flat and looks forward to new projects with his support team, including possible travel or new activities.
