Last May, we wrote about our involvement in a play called Kindness - Legacy of the Holocaust.
A year on, our "theatre squad" is still going strong. This blog post by Adam Jones reflects on the value of theatrical partnerships for people who draw on MacIntyre's support.
Celebrating theatre and empowerment
From the moment I joined MacIntyre, I have been continually inspired by the extraordinary potential of the people we support.
Theatre, with its vivid storytelling and expressive power, offers a unique pathway for individuals to explore and develop their skills and passions.
About a year ago, I was introduced to an opportunity that merges these elements perfectly—the partnership between MacIntyre and Voices of the Holocaust, an inclusive theatre company/education charity.
Discovering Voices of the Holocaust
The discovery of Voices of the Holocaust came at a serendipitous moment, shortly after I started my role at MacIntyre. Always on the lookout for innovative ways to enrich the lives of those we support, the connection with this theatre company appeared as a promising avenue not just for engagement but for real, meaningful inclusion.
Building bridges through theatre
Our initial connection with Voices of the Holocaust was facilitated by our shared commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. Cate, the Artistic Director of Voices, and her team have not only embraced our collaboration but have actively ensured that it remains a core element of their mission.
This partnership has enabled some of the people we support in Milton Keynes Lifelong Learning to participate in a truly inclusive environment, whether through attending rehearsals, making props, costumes and staging, participating in performances and public events, or simply being part of a community that values every voice.
Mutual support and future aspirations
The reciprocal nature of our relationship with Voices of the Holocaust has been profoundly beneficial. While we provide a new and enthusiastic audience, along with participants eager to learn and engage, Voices offers an incredible platform for expression and professional experience in the arts.
Watching the performance of "Kindness" was an enlightening experience. The play not only educates about the horrors of the Holocaust through a sensitive and accessible approach but also resonates deeply with audiences, encouraging empathy and understanding.
After all, people with disabilities were among those targeted by the Nazi regime as 'unworthy of life'. This programme truly evidences the opposite: that through collaborative shared work, all our experiences and understandings are enriched.
Voices is an incredible space. Everyone feels the values and see the difference that inclusivity brings to our work. We are always better off for the times we are working together as one.

A work experience programme
Looking ahead, we are excited about the development of a structured yet flexible work experience programme. This initiative aims to provide more individuals with the opportunity to be part of a team, to use their skills, and to gain professional experience. Ultimately, our goal is to establish paid roles within the company, enhancing the sense of empowerment and achievement for both the individuals involved and for the organisations supporting them.
Through this partnership, we continue to make theatre—and through it, history and learning—accessible to all. It's about creating spaces where everyone can contribute, learn, and grow. This is just the beginning of a broader movement towards inclusivity and empowerment in the arts, driven by the belief that everyone, everywhere, has a valuable role to play.
