At MacIntyre, we believe that everyone deserves to feel confident, informed, and respected - especially when it comes to their own body. We know that talking about periods can make people feel embarrassed or confused, particularly for people with learning disabilities.
We were delighted to launch “Let’s Talk. Period.”, a project proudly funded by the Holland & Barrett Well Woman Fund. This year-long initiative set out to change the conversation around periods - to make it open, honest, and accessible for everyone.
Why this project matters
Periods are a natural part of life, but for many people with learning disabilities, understanding what’s happening to their body can be overwhelming. The information available is often complicated, unclear, or not inclusive.
Let’s Talk. Period. was co-created with people with lived experience. From the beginning, we worked alongside people, their families, staff teams, and the wider community. Together, we built a project focused on making sure no one feels alone, ashamed, or left out when it comes to learning about periods and menopause.
Achieving together
Led by Rachel Furniss from MacIntyre’s Best Practice team, the project brought together voices, experiences, and ideas from across MacIntyre. Here’s just some of what we accomplished:
- Delivered fun, inclusive workshops in schools, learning hubs and homes –spaces where people could ask questions, share experiences, and explore period products in a relaxed, respectful setting.
- Created co-produced Easy Read resources, focusing on periods, products, and managing periods with confidence.
- Supported people as Co-Trainers, giving space for experts by experience to lead conversations and break down barriers.
- Shared learning at national events and conferences, encouraging others to open up these conversations within their own services and communities.
- Distributed period packs to schools, learning centres and local MacIntyre teams. These resources and products ensure no one is left without essential items.
Rachel said of the project:
“I’m so proud of how far we’ve come. We’ve not only shared vital knowledge - we’ve shifted attitudes. People are asking questions, feeling comfortable, and learning how to support each other.”
Feedback from the workshops and training sessions speaks volumes:
“Everyone should know about periods. I'm a man and knew nothing – thank you for helping me understand what women are going through and how I can help.”
“Gemma, you were amazing. It’s so powerful to have experts by experience help train!”
A lasting impact
Although the project has come to an end, its legacy will continue. The resources we created are now part of everyday life across MacIntyre, used in schools, homes, community hubs, and where people feel supported.
Most importantly, Let’s Talk. Period. has sparked conversations that will carry on in a way people will continue to feel empowered and in control of their bodies and choices.
Our thanks to Holland & Barrett and the Well Women Fund for believing in this project. Their support helped us reach so many people with learning disabilities and autistic people with the dignity, respect, and information they deserve.
Let’s keep talking. Period.
