A neighbourly invitation

4 April 2025
News

Jamie and Sandra had been neighbours in Greater Manchester for years, but they’d never really got to know each other properly until one day Jamie was in his front garden and spotted a smiley neighbour across the road looking over. Jamie called:

Hi, I’m Jamie, nice to meet you

It all started with an exchange of words from across the street to Sandra going over to Jamie’s front garden for a proper chat. Their friendship blossomed from there.

A shared love of gardening

Sandra told Jamie that she liked his garden space at the front, his plant pots were incredible, the bird bath and memorial bench for his dog were lovely. Sandra who has a real knack for gardening offered:

If you ever need a hand with anything out here, just give me a shout.

From then on, they started spending more time together. Jamie would often pop round for a cuppa, and they’d chat for ages about all sorts - gardening, childhood memories, anything and everything.

Creating a memorial garden

When Jamie mentioned wanting to create a proper memorial garden for his mum, Sandra was the first to offer her help. Together, they planned it all - picking out flowers his mum had loved, and placing ornaments that meant something special. It was hard work, but they had a laugh along the way, and Jamie was so grateful for Sandra’s help.

Christmas connection

Over time, their friendship grew, but Jamie noticed something - Sandra didn’t seem to have many visitors. She never mentioned family or friends calling round, and when he asked about her plans for Christmas, she shrugged and said:

Oh, I’ll just be at home, nothing special.

That didn’t sit right with Jamie. No one should have to spend Christmas alone. So, without thinking too much about it, he said:

Well, you’re more than welcome to join me. I’ll be cooking a proper dinner, and I’d love the company.

Sandra looked surprised.

Oh, I wouldn’t want to intrude...

she said.

You wouldn't be

Jamie said firmly...

You’ve been round enough times for tea—this is just tea with a roast and a few crackers thrown in.

Sandra hesitated for a moment, then smiled.

Alright then, I’d love to!

And just like that, Christmas was set to be a little less lonely for both of them.

And now it's Spring

Sandra and Jamie's friendship has continued to blossom along with the flowers, as they carry on gardening together. Their current project is making his mum's memorial garden look lovely for the summer.

And all because Jamie called out to introduce himself to his neighbour one day.
