For Volunteers Week 2025, we're hearing from some MacIntyre people about their volunteering experiences.
Volunteering with the YMCA
Outside of MacIntyre, I volunteer with the YMCA as a youth mentor. I've been doing this since the start of the year.
I work with young people through regular 1-2-1 sessions, offering support, encouragement, and a listening ear as they go through challenges such as education pressures, relationships, family issues, and low self-esteem.
Being a trusted listener
A lot of the time, it’s less about providing solutions and more about being a steady, non judgemental presence, someone they know they can trust and talk to openly. I also get involved in group activities and workshops when I can, helping to create safe where young people feel heard and valued.
The rewards of volunteering
This role means a lot to me. I know how important it is for young people to feel seen and supported, especially when they’re facing tough times or feel misunderstood. Being part of their journey, even in a small way, is something I find incredibly rewarding.
Volunteering has also helped me develop personally, it’s taught me patience, empathy, and how to really listen. It reminds me of the power of connection and how a little bit of time and consistency can make a big difference.
