A MacIntyre No Limits™ student who graduated this year is passionate about books and loves libraries. They believe that no matter what your abilities or interests there’s a book out there for you!
A library dream
Their dream was to work in a library but there were a few steps they wanted to work through first. Part of that was thinking through how for some people, a library isn’t a fully inclusive space and so the person thought about what they could create so people who didn’t feel they could go to a library could still borrow or access books.
A smart alternative
They reached out to get some money and got some funding. They found a space at the college that was welcoming and they found shelves and dividers and upcycled and designed the way it would work. They developed a spreadsheet to keep track of the books. They asked for good books that covered a wide range of interests to be donated and thought about topics that would make sure people could learn or simply enjoy what they were reading.
A lasting legacy
They left No Limits and really wanted to make sure that the library continued and the books were used.
I saw on Facebook a new venture, Get Free Books High Wycombe. It’s a community book shop or lending library that had the same aspirations as our student: to get books to people!
We connected and have talked about the books but also volunteering opportunities and ways we can support each other. It’s amazing that this student's passion has led to new opportunities for future students and their love for books is leaving a community legacy.
