Willing to learn: Nathan’s Story

26 November 2019
News

When Nathan, a young man supported through MacIntyre No Limits in Buckinghamshire approached the team with an interest in teaching, it wasn't long before he began to inspire not only the students at a local school, but the staff there too.

This is Nathan’s Story.

Working alongside the MacIntyre No Limits team, Nathan was supported to contact a local pre-school, where he has been supporting staff to provide a fun and educational environment during his work experience.

In the classroom, Nathan’s primary role is to help the children to read. By covering up parts of the page the children may be struggling with, Nathan encourages and supports the children to sound out the words, developing not only their literacy skills but their confidence too.

Bringing his own experiences to the table, it has struck staff at the school how well Nathan interacts with the students who have autism.

Referring to Nathan’s work, staff at the school said:

“The benefit of Nathan working with the children is that he understands what learning style works for each child. He has shown he is able to support them and understands their need to work in a calm, consistent manner.”

Nathan has also been demonstrating his practical skills in the classroom, by supporting the teachers with administrative tasks, such as laminating and cutting out materials needed for upcoming lessons.

He has also supported staff during lunchtimes, cleaning up after the children have eaten and ensuring the space is left clean and presentable for the following day.

Nathan’s enthusiasm has been praised by staff at the school who considered him to be a valuable member of the team.

Staff added:

“By working here, Nathan has grasped how the school functions and the importance of punctuality. We have also noticed It has had a fantastic impact on his self-esteem too.”
