James, who is supported by MacIntyre in Leicester, has always had an eye for creativity, whether it was producing beautifully crafted models or participating in a variety of fun activities— he would always show an interest to get involved.
This sparked an idea for Lyn Mawhinney (Deputy Manager-Leicester Outreach), to surprise James with a trip to ‘Light up Leicester’. A city-wide illuminated festival of world-class art where the streets are filled with interactive artworks, offering a digital take on traditional light festivals.
Before surprising James, Lyn mentioned:
“Every month I create a flyer for the staff, which mainly includes events in Leicester. James has always expressed his love for firework displays and so I thought this upcoming event which is all about a display of lights would excite him.”
She added:
“As soon as James saw the flyer and all of the images, he immediately communicated that he would like to attend.”
Along with his sculpted Elephant, James attended the festival, admiring larger than life sculptures and engaging with the artists and their work. Talking about James’ experience at the festival, Lyn said:
“James loved the event! He was absolutely captivated with the lights and had a terrific night.”
Lyn also discussed how trips have played a major role in James’ personal growth and independence:
“Throughout the years, James has progressed and continually made us proud with his participation in trying new activities and self-development. Words cannot express how rewarding my job has been in seeing James grow and develop, and even now I am lucky enough to support James and see his independence mature. I'm so proud of him and all of his achievements.”
